Spirits Brands - Statistics & Facts

The term “spirits” refers to an alcoholic beverage that has been distilled, contains no added sugar, and has at least 20 percent alcohol by volume. The term is derived from the medieval practice of alchemy and refers to the essential liquid element obtained from a substance through distillation, the “spirit” of the substance, so to speak. Popular spirits include whiskey, rum, vodka, tequila, and gin, among others.

Bacardi Limited is also known for its signature white rum, though the family-owned company now produces more than 200 brands of alcohol. In 2018, Bacardi had the eighth highest sales figures of all spirits brands in the United States.

Smirnoff brand vodka ranked highest in U.S. sales with over 315 million U.S. dollars in sales in 2018. Like Captain Morgan, the vodka brand is also owned by Diageo. In a survey conducted in 2017, nearly 80 percent of consumers surveyed where familiar with the Smirnoff brand.
