Number of people consuming alcohol Australia 2020 and 2023, by type
In the 12 months to March 2023, around 8.9 million people were consuming wine across Australia, marking a rise from pre-pandemic levels in the year to March 2020, in which just over eight million people were drinking wine. Beer, on the other hand, witnessed a fall in consumption; in the 12 months to March 2020, there were over 7.4 million people drinking beer across Australia, falling to around 6.5 million in the 12 months to March 2023. Ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages (RTDs) witnessed the most notable change in consumption from pre-pandemic levels to the year to March 2023, increasing by over two million consumers.
