Floor area of residential housings expropriated in Shanghai 2022, by district
In 2022, around 949.6 thousand square meters of housing stocks were expropriated in Shanghai. Located in the heart of the municipality and with many old neighborhoods that required regeneration, Huangpu district had 486 thousand square meters of residential buildings expropriated. The 2022 figures increased tremendously compared to the year of 2021. As all urban lands in China are solely owned by the state, lands in city centers are often expropriated by local governments, with old housing stocks demolished and land rights leased to real estate developers.
