Distribution of monthly consumption expenditure in India in 2019 and 2020
As of December 2020, 62.6 percent of Indian households spent no more than 2.4 thousand Indian rupees (INR) per month, whereas nine percent had at most merely one thousand rupees to live on. In general, the share of households within each respective cut-off value in December 2020 increased in comparison with December 2019, which most likely indicated that poverty in India had been exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
