People living in extreme poverty in Kenya 2016-2024, by area
In 2024, over 7.8 million people in Kenya lived in extreme poverty, the majority in rural areas. Those living on less than 2.15 U.S. dollars a day in rural regions added up to around 10.6 million, while around 1.7 million extremely poor people resided in urban areas. During the period observed, the poverty incidence in Kenya peaked in 2020, when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted the country's economy.
