Repairs of motor vehicles brought in 54 billion euros in 2016, having increased by 17 percent since the low recorded in 2014. In terms ofmarket size, the repair industry generated 11.27 billion euros in production value.
There was a noticeable drop in car sales recorded for 2018. Figures fell to levels last seen in 2010, at 299,716 units sold. However, while new registrations were generally in decline, the number of alternatively fueled cars sold grew prominently by nearly 19 percent between 2017 and 2018. This suggested a greater awareness regarding the environmental impact of combustion engines and pollution, but may have also been the result of more electric vehicle charging stations becoming available.
Swiss residents clearly preferred buying German cars. Of the five most sold car brands in 2018, four were German, with Volkswagen taking the lead. Luxury car maker Mercedes came in second, having sold 25,661 units that year.
