Coffee market in Europe - Statistics & Facts

Coffee is one of the most popular hot beverages in Europe and an important commodity worldwide. Coffee, prepared from roasted coffee beans, represents one of the key industries in several developing countries located in equatorial regions, such as Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Indonesia.

The two types of coffee most commonly grown are Arabica and Robusta. However, it is worth mentioning another type of coffee, known in particular for its controversial effects on weight loss: green coffee. Mostly supplied by developing countries, green coffee is widely consumed in several European countries including Germany and Norway.

On a European retail level, Western Europe is characterized by the presence of several coffee brands which dominate the market. In particular, Nescafé holds the leading position in terms of retail share, followed by Nespesso, who also had a 24.5 percent market share in coffee-capsules in 2015.

With respect to coffee consumption, the number of out-of-home coffee servings is particularly substantial in Italy, where 4.78 billion cups were consumed in 2015. Yet overall, Sweden had the highest coffee consumption per capita at 10.1 kilograms. In many countries, such as the Netherlands, people seem keener on consuming coffee at home. Despite this, coffee chains are still popular among consumers who want to enjoy their coffee on the go; Costa, Starbucks as well as McCafé have over two thousand units across Europe respectively.
