Convenience stores in the U.S. - Statistics & Facts

A convenience store is a small retail business that stocks a range of everyday items such as snack foods, soft drinks, groceries, confectionery, tobacco products, over-the-counter drugs, toiletries, newspapers, and magazines. The total number of convenience stores in the U.S. today is over a hundred and fifty thousand. The first chain convenience store in the U.S. was opened in Dallas, Texas in 1927. The chain eventually came to be known as 7-Eleven — currently the largest convenience store chain in North America. Other leading convenience stores in the United States include: Circle K, Speedway, Casey’s and CST Brands.

In the U.S., a convenience store may be part of a gas station, typically located alongside a busy road, in an urban area, or inside a transport hub. In 2015 alone, the total sales generated from the U.S. convenience store industry amounted to around 603 billion U.S. dollars — with more than half of it coming from the sale of motor fuel. The volume of motor fuel sold at convenience stores in the U.S. amounted to about 151.3 billion gallons for that same year. The annual sales of the gasoline station industry is projected to reach over 600 billion U.S. dollars by 2017 but in spite of such impressive numbers, proceeds from in-store sales of U.S. convenience stores in the U.S. is largely dominated by the sale of merchandise. A total sale of about 692 million U.S. dollars was recorded for general merchandise in 2015 alone.

Convenience stores can also be licensed to sell alcohol in certain jurisdictions in the U.S. and some convenience stores may also offer money order and wire transfer services. The total weekly number of recorded convenience store transactions per week amounted to 5,835 in 2015 alone.
