Marriott International - Statistics & Facts

In 1927, Marriott International was founded by J. Willard Marriott and his wife in Washington D.C., United States. The couple opened their first hotel in Arlington, Virginia in 1957 - the company has subsequently grown into a hotel chain with almost 7,000 properties worldwide. Marriott aquired Canadian chain Delta Hotels and American chain Starwood Hotels and Resorts, in the years 2015 and 2016, respectively. This resulted in Marriott having a larger presence outside of the U.S. - with 1,800 international properties.

Marriott International’s total revenue steadily increased until 2018, where it dropped from the previous years total of almost 23 billion U.S. dollars to just under 21 billion U.S. dollars. In 2018, the average daily rate of Marriott hotels worldwide was 182.67 U.S. dollars. Europe had the highest average daily rate of 205.15 U.S. dollars, however, North America accounted for the highest occupancy rate of 75.7 percent.

Marriott International is now the largest hotel chain in the world in terms of revenue. Its closest competitor Hilton Worldwide was ranked as the second largest chain, accounting for less than half the revenue of Marriott. That being said, Hilton Worldwide has received a higher American Customer Satisfaction Index score than Marriott in the years since the aquisition of Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
