Retailers have been faced with major challenges in the last few years: rising commodity prices resulting in food scandals, consumers seeking healthier options like leaner types of meat and retailers being forced to start gradually reducing prices. Beef is still the cash cow of the fresh meat retail department, with sales of 19,234 U.S. dollars per store per week. Within the category, conventionally produced meat seems to be most appealing to consumers. Fresh ground beef is one of the most popular cut types among consumers, and had the highest category share with 42.1 percent in 2017.
According to a recent consumer survey in 2015, some 63 percent of Americans try to include beef and other red meat into their diet. Some 47 percent of U.S. consumers reportedly purchase beef two to three times a week.
