By 2022 the total number of mobile subscriptions worldwide is forecast to grow to more than nine billion. In the Americas alone the number of mobile subscriptions per 100 inhabitants stood at 114 in 2017. The majority of mobile users today are smartphone users, as around 2.3 billion people used a smartphone in 2017. Samsung has been the leading global smartphone vendor for the last few years. Apple, Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi rank behind Samsung in terms of smartphone shipments in 2017.
The mobile communication industry is dominated by giant telecom multinational companies. The leading telecommunication brands worldwide are AT&T, Verizon, China Mobile, Xfinity, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom. Two American companies lead the rank; AT&T with a brand value of around 115 billion U.S. dollars, followed by Verizon, which is valued at about 89 billion U.S. dollars.
