Export of British snacks
UK snacks are not only enjoyed by Brits. Many snacks and products are exported worldwide from the UK. For example, 610 million British pounds’ worth of chocolate and confectionery were exported to the EU alone in 2021. An additional 310 million British pounds’ worth was sent to non-EU countries. The value of bread, biscuits, wafers, cakes, and pastries exported that year were valued at over 850 million British pounds.Sweet or salty?
As ubiquitous as snacking is, many people prefer either sweet snacks, like candies and chocolates, or salty snacks, such as pretzels, crackers, or chips. In 2019/20, consumers were buying almost 100 grams of chocolate per person per week. Weekly chocolate purchases have been increasing most years as well. Hard candies are also popular sweets in the UK, with 23.7 million kilograms manufactured in 2021.Salty snacks are equally popular in the UK. In 2021, consumers purchased about 61 grams of potato chips (commonly referred to as crisps in the UK) per person per week. Potato chips had a retail sales volume of almost 163 thousand metric tons that year, increasing over 16 percent compared to the previous year. It seems that consumers’ appetites for snacks will continue to grow.
