Convenience store numbers in Japan 2008-2017

Number of convenience stores (konbini) in Japan from 2008 to 2017 (in 1,000s)

by Statista Research Department, last edited Sep 24, 2019
Convenience store numbers in Japan 2008-2017 In 2017, there were over 56 thousand convenience stores operating in Japan. Convenience stores, often shortened to konbini among Japanese, make up an integral part of the country’s retail sector. While Japan’s total retail sales amounted to almost 143 trillion Japanese yen in 2017, domestic convenience stores generated revenues worth approximately 12 trillion yen during the same year.
Who is ruling Japan’s convenience store segment?

Seven-Eleven holds the lion’s share within the domestic konbini market, operating almost 35 percent of the convenience stores located in Japan as of 2018. Notably, the country’s convenience store retail segment is dominated by three major chains. Besides Seven-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson each own between a 20 and 30 percent share, altogether dividing almost 90 percent of the domestic market between them.

Why are konbinis so popular in Japan?

Japan is known for its well-oiled service industry and its fondness of around-the-clock convenience. Since the busy lifestyle of many of the country’s citizens demands efficiency in both their professional and private lives, the perpetual availability and hassle-free shopping experience of convenience stores are matching modern-day consumer demands.
In addition to selling a wide selection of food products and everyday goods, konbinis also offer a variety of services, such as payment and ATM services, courier and postal services, or ticket sales, including theme park and airline tickets. Furthermore, online orders can be payed via designated konbini payment solutions, bypassing credit card or online payments, both of which many Japanese are still wary of.
