International hotel guests in the Netherlands 2021, by city

In 2021, international hotel guests in the Netherlands were much more likely to stay overnight in Amsterdam than in any other major city in the country. Around 1.74 million international guests made use of hotel accommodations in the capital city of the Netherlands, whereas approximately 215 thousand and 210 thousand people stayed at hotels in Rotterdam and The Hague, respectively. Observing the number of domestic hotel guests by major cities in the Netherlands in 2020, Amsterdam attracted roughly 871 thousand Dutch people staying at hotel accommodations, whereas Maastricht had 309 thousand hotel guests.

Hotel guests in the Netherlands

According to a survey conducted by Statista, people between 25 to 34 years of age constituted the largest share of hotel users in the Netherlands in 2021. Specifically, people in this age category made up a little more than a quarter of hotel users in the Netherlands that year. The same study also identified the income distribution of hotel guests in the country, with high income individuals accounting for 44.5 percent of hotel guests in the same year.

Accommodation in Amsterdam

The capital city of the Netherlands is a major travel destination for tourists worldwide. Provisional figures for 2021 show that there were more than six thousand hotels in Amsterdam at the end of the year. Focusing on the classification of hotels in the city in 2020, four star establishments constituted the largest share of hotel room types in Amsterdam that year. The average cost of an overnight stay in a double room in the city was higher in February 2022 compared to the same month in previous years.
