This statistic presents the leading catastrophe bond transactions worldwide in 2016. Catastrophe bonds are financial instruments allowing the raising of money in case of a catastrophe. They are usually issued in the form of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) by insurance companies (sponsors) to transfer some risk to cat bonds investors. If a catastrophe occurs, the insurance companies can use the money coming from cat bonds to pay out the premiums to the insurance holders. If there is no catastrophe in the specified time frame, the cat bond investors get back their money invested in the bond, increased by a coupon. The value of Galilei Re Ltd. 2016-1 catastrophe bond, issued in 2016 by XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd. to cover the following risks: U.S. named storm, North America earthquake, Europe windstorm, Australia tropical cyclone, Australia earthquake, amounted to 750 million U.S. dollars.
