Sales of the leading tortilla and tostada chip brands of the U.S. 2017
The tortilla and tostada chip market in the United States - additional information
In the United States, Tex-Mex cuisine is a fusion between traditional Mexican and mostly Southwestern American cooking. Foods such as Chili con carne or Fajitas became increasingly popular in the southern part of the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century and quickly spread throughout the country, becoming a staple of many American diets. However, one of the greatest inventions of the Tex-Mex cuisine is corn-based snacks: tortilla and tostada chips. They can be enjoyed on the go, but also as appetizers in Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants. As a recent poll shows, some 30 percent of U.S. American adults claim they have eaten between one and three tortilla chip bags in the past month, while 2.5 percent claim to have eaten eight or more.
Tortilla and tostada chips were rated among the best selling salty snacks in the United States, as highlighted in a recent study. With 2015 sales worth more than 3.8 billion U.S. dollars, they placed third, after crackers and potato chips. Frito Lay, Inc., a division of PepsiCo, was the leading tortilla and tostada chips vendor in the United States in 2016, based on sales. As of 2014, PepsiCo was the largest player in the entire savory snack industry in the United States, with a market share of 36 percent.
