Opinions on human rights in Tunisia 2019
In 2019, the majority of Tunisian respondents, nearly 86 percent, agreed that the perpetrators of human rights violations under the old regimes had to be prosecuted and/or punished. Moreover, around 83 percent stated that these infractions had to be disclosed publicly. In the same year, the Truth and Dignity Commission of Tunisia, an independent law tribunal since 2013, released a report about human rights abuses that involved, among others, presidents Habib Bourguiba and Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, as well as police officials and judicial authorities in the country. Torture, arbitrary detention, and sexual assaults were mentioned among the crimes perpetrated.
