Amount of cattle slaughtered Japan 2019, by type of cattle
In 2019, approximately 457 thousand wagyu, also known as Japanese cattle, were slaughtered in Japan. A specialty of wagyu beef is that the fatty tissue is distributed finely in the muscle meat, instead of punctually. The fat percentage of wagyu beef has increased in recent years due to a decrease in grazing and an increase in using feed. Altogether, over one million cattle were slaughtered in Japan in 2019.
