Number of people claiming unemployment benefit in the UK 1971-2024
Just under 1.58 million people claimed unemployment benefits in the United Kingdom in January 2024, one of the lowest claimant counts since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns played havoc with the UK economy, leading to the sharp rise in jobless claims seen here in April 2020.
