According to a survey conducted in November 2019 asking Japanese citizens in which cases a permanent residence permit should be revoked, a share of approximately 81 percent of respondents stated commission of a crime and a concomitant prison sentence as a justifying reason. At a share of around 73.2 percent, not paying taxes or social insurance premium was another commonly stated reason for revocation of permanent resident status.
