Sales of quick-service restaurants in Canada 2010-2015
Quick service restaurants in Canada - additional information
Quick service restaurants, more commonly referred to as fast food restaurants, have limited menus and, as the name implies, serve food quickly – usually during the time it takes the customer to pay for their meal at the counter. In Canada, quick service restaurant sales reached over 25 billion Canadian dollars in 2014. Sales figures for full service restaurants were comparable with sales of 24.8 billion Canadian dollars. In the wider Canadian restaurant industry, sales reached 72 billion Canadian dollars during the same year.
Fast food is undoubtedly as popular in Canada as it is in many countries worldwide, but, while Canada has its own fast food chains they are in competition with those of the country’s closest neighbor and the home of fast food – the United States. Food and drink sales of limited service restaurants in the U.S. were expected to exceed 200 billion U.S. dollars (around 245 billion Canadian dollars as of May 2015) in 2015. It is not surprising, then, that the majority of fast food chains in Canada are American.
Canada’s own largest restaurant chain is Tim Hortons. The coffee chain has been growing its reputation outside of Canada in recent years and in its home country it is larger than the global fast food giants McDonald’s and Starbucks. In December 2014, Tim Hortons was acquired by Burger King to form Canada-based company Restaurant Brands International - now one of the largest fast food companies worldwide.
