coal power plants is a major public health concern in the Western Balkan region, with countries such as Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina hugely reliant on this polluting energy source. Coal power plants emit several harmful pollutants, but the majority of air pollution-related deaths are linked to particulate matter (PM2.5). If coal power is phased out by 2030 rather 2050, it could potentially avoid some 12,000 premature deaths due to PM2.5 pollution, and 1,200 premature deaths due to other pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and ozone.
It is estimated that air pollution from coal power plants will cause 64,265 premature deaths in the Western Balkan region between 2020 and 2030. This number will rise to almost 80,000 by 2050 if coal burning continues as usual.
